Previously I did a post about the history of the Skateagy comic. I thought I would continue talking about the comic so, this post is about the Prologue.
The Skateagy comic tells of a journey of a teenage girl gaining confidence while working towards her dreams. The comic has been an idea of mine for a long time. It has evolved through the years into the story line I have for it now. It didn’t always have a Prologue, but when I was starting to put it up online I decided one would be appropriate.
The prologue mainly sets up the story introduces the Legends, who are the main role models for skateboarders. It starts with their story to explain a few things about the world and provide background. These legends are very confident in their skills although they are not perfect at what they do. At the end of the prologue, a young Ashling is introduced. It shows the slight influence of skateboarding when she is young. The same page also has a prophecy/legend of someone who is supposed to be Skateagy. Who she is supposed to be and what has been said of her. Writing a prophecy/legend was actually challenging because it was so early on and I was not sure how my characters would change. It helped me to look at some of my favorite books and how they were done in them. In future chapters, Ashling is the main character and a teenager.
Writing the prologue was a little challenging because the world Ashling, and the Legends are in is the Skateagy World. This world has always been a magical world for skateboarding, but not much more than that. So, I actually had to flesh out the idea more to make it work for the story. Story wise it was hard to decide on a few points like how do the dreams and thoughts of a skater become real. Another challenge was deciding on a name for my main character because I wanted something that would match her as who she is and something I could build more on (have her progress and become more). The meaning of Ashling fit (Ashling means dream, vision, dreamer).
