In the last post of the series, I talked about the Boys vs. Girls series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. In this post I’ll be talking about the Phantom Stallion series by Terri Farley which influenced my writing a lot. If you haven’t read the last post click the button below,
Phantom Stallion is about a girl named Sam, her wild horse Phantom (who used to be known as Blackie) and Sam’s life on the ranch. Also, there is a father daughter relationship and Sam’s friend, Jake thrown into the mix.
When I read the series as a teenager, I enjoyed it because I was in the teenage girl horse phase and the father daughter relationship. I started writing a lot more horse stories and father daughter relationship stories during this time. A lot of these stories had some similar things that The Skateboarding Dream does. A girl who has a hard time getting along with her dad, A girl who has dreams, and a girl who has a lot of emotions to work through.
The way I saw the Phantom Stallion series was like it was real although I realized when I was a little older that it was pretty fictional. But the father daughter relationship, and a teenage girl’s emotions never left my writing. I found it was something I could write about.
